That's a very beautiful photo. How come the water looks so smooth though? Sorry I ain't a photographer or artist so I prolly worded it wrong. This deviantart thing all new to me, I just registered today. Casey told me 'bout your page, I think you are friends with her?

Thanks for appreciating the image :) It looks smooth because the camera lens stayed open longer than a split second, so it actually captured continuous motion of the water which results in this effect.

Thank you Casey, I'm surprised you commented in French :) Long exposure isn't hard once you get used to it, just need a tripod and an interesting composition. The super long exposures are trickier and require lots of patience, but for a waterfall with enough light around it should only take a few seconds.

Haha I actually speak some French. My great aunt on my mother's side was a WWII French war bride plus I studied 3 years in school. I am a bit rusty, though, as I have no one here to converse with. However, I do think one of my dogs must be French as he responds better when I speak it to him lol

I actually have an awesome tripod that one of my friends bought me for Hanukkah last year. He was all "I love your photography, both architecture/nature and of Seth; here have this $400 tripod that I caught on sale for $95!" which about made me faint, after I squealed with delight of course! It's a Ravelli APGL4 and is just amazing. I just need to practice with long exposure as it is just intimidating for me, not sure why. Same thing with HDR really, I'd love to try it but nervous to. I've only ever done 1 HDR photo but wasn't that happy with it.

You should buy your dog a beret =p I think I understand why long exposure looks intimidating, I felt the same way too because it was uncharted territory. You don't have to go out though and shoot long exposure waterfalls or street scenes on day 1. I personally started with simple objects inside the comfort of my own home, incidentally at the same time I was acquainting myself with macro photography.

Many of my macros, close-ups and product shoots are technically long exposures because I rest my camera on a tripod and leave the shutter open for longer than a split second (of course this means leaving the flash off). And the beauty of it is, most digital cameras come with histogram previews so you can see firsthand how your highlights and shadows are distributed right after taking the picture (and adjust the exposure if need be afterwards). Shooting at home also means you have easy access to the computer to see your photo at high resolution almost instantaneously.

As different as product photography seems to be from long exposures, you can transfer the skills over once you're comfortable using a tripod. Takes a small leap of faith to begin with, but opens a whole new world of possibilities :)
